Kratom varieties are commonly called "strains" by consumers.
They are not botanical strains in the purest sense of the word. Kratom varieties have more to do with how the leaf material is processed, and less to do with different plant varietals or the regions in which they are grown.
Much is needed in the way of horticultural research to determine whether there are differences in kratom trees from different regions.
For now, when people talk about kratom "strains" they mean different varieties of kratom that may have been harvested during different times of the year, may be old or young leaves, and may be dried and processed differently. All of these factors will produce a unique variety of alkaloid content.
Many kratom vendors and consumers go by the adage of "white for flight, red for bed, and green in between". White "strains" of kratom usually produce energy, reds produce relaxation, and green is a mixture. It doesn't necessarily adhere to the colors of the veins, or the colors of the dried leaf powder.
